Moving Checklist

Moving to a new house can be a complex and stressful process, but with proper planning and organisation, you can make it more manageable. Here's a checklist to help you get organised in the months leading up to your move:

8 Weeks Before the Move:

  1. Create a Moving Binder: Start a dedicated folder or binder to keep all your moving-related documents and receipts organized.

  2. Research Moving Companies: Get quotes from several moving companies and choose the one that best suits your needs and budget.

  3. Declutter: Begin going through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate, or throw away. This will reduce the items you need to move.

6 Weeks Before the Move:

  1. Notify Important Parties:

    • Notify your current and future utility providers about the upcoming move.

    • Inform your workplace and your children's school about the move.

  2. Gather Packing Supplies:

    • Purchase or collect boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and other necessary packing materials. (VISY boxes and more Queanbeyan)

  3. Start Packing:

    • Begin packing items you won't need until after the move, such as seasonal clothing and rarely used kitchen appliances.

4 Weeks Before the Move:

  1. Label Your Boxes: Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking easier.

  2. When packing fragile items, remember to pack most things upright. Like an egg that doesn't crack from top and bottom pressure. This includes plates and glasses too.

  3. Notify Change of Address:

    • Update your address with the post office, banks, credit card companies, and subscription services.

    • Inform friends and family of your new address.

  4. Plan for Special Items: Make arrangements for valuable or fragile items like artwork, antiques, or instruments.

2 Weeks Before the Move:

  1. Finalise Packing: Continue packing non-essential items, leaving only the essentials for the last week.

  2. Confirm with Movers: Confirm the moving date and details with your chosen moving company.

  3. Arrange Child and Pet Care: Plan for child and pet care on moving day to keep them safe and out of the way.

  4. Let your neighbours know you're moving and a large truck will be in the street. It may be bin day or the truck may need extra turning space to enter your driveway.

1 Week Before the Move:

  1. Pack Essentials Box: Pack a box with essential items you'll need on the first day in your new home (toiletries, clothes, important documents, etc.).

  2. Empty and Defrost Appliances: Empty and clean your refrigerator and defrost the freezer.

  3. Disassemble Furniture: Disassemble large furniture if necessary.

Moving Day:

  1. Double-Check Everything: Walk through your home one last time to ensure everything is packed and all utilities are turned off.

  2. Remove your vehicles from the driveway.

  3. Clear all hallways and entry ways to ensure a clear path for your removalist's

  4. Clear all furniture and beds of loose items.

  5. Stay Available: Be available to answer any questions the movers may have.

After the Move:

  1. Unpack Essentials Box: Start with your essentials box, then gradually unpack room by room.

  2. Flat pack your cartons and find a spot to leave them out of the way.

  3. Inspect Your Belongings: Check your belongings for any damage or missing items. Notify the moving company if there are any issues.

  4. Update Important Records: Update your driver's license, vehicle registration, and voter registration with your new address.

  5. Explore Your New Neighborhood: Get to know your new surroundings and locate essential services like grocery stores, pharmacies, and hospitals.

Moving can be stressful, but with this checklist, you can stay organized and ensure a smoother transition to your new home. Customise it to your specific needs and timeline to make the process as hassle-free as possible.
